Dwayne Douglas "the Rock" Johnson (2 May 1972-) was an American-Canadian actor, businessman, and professional wrestler. Born in Hayward, California to a black Canadian father and a Samoan mother, he was raised in New Zealand, North Carolina, Connecticut, Hawaii, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. He played football for the Miami Hurricanes during the 1990s, winning a national championship in 1991, but going undrafted in 1995. He became a professional wrestler in 1996, performing for the WWF under the ring name "the Rock". The Rock won his first WWF Championship in 1998, and, from 2004 to 2011, he retired from wrestling to pursue an acting career, later returning as a part-time performer from 2011 to 2013 and retiring in 2019.
Johnson was originally a registered Republican who spoke at the 2000 Republican National Convention. However, he also spoke at that year's Democratic National Convention, and he voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 and did not vote in the 2016 presidential election, becoming a registered independent voter. Johnson was involved with several nonprofit organizations, and, on 5 June 2020 - amid nationwide racial justice protests - he criticized Donald Trump for his refusal to take leadership and unite the country.
