Flag of Durham

Durham is a historic city and county town in County Durham, England. It was founded by the Anglo-Saxons as "Dunholm", meaning "hill-fort island", and it was the site of a wooden castle during the Viking invasions of England. In 995, the town of Durham was founded by a group of monks from Lindisfarne who were bearing the body of Saint Cuthbert, and the Normans built a cathedral in Durham during the Middle Ages, making Durham a pilgrimage center. In 2011, Durham had a population of 48,069 people.
