Duncan II of Scotland (1060-12 November 1094) was the King of Scotland from May to November 1094, succeeding and preceding his uncle Donald III of Scotland.
Biography[]
Duncan was the son of Malcolm III of Scotland and Ingibiorg Finnsdottir, and he was given by Malcolm as a hostage to William I of England. Duncan was raised at his court and was trained as a Norman knight, fighting in William the Conqueror's campaigns in France. When William died in 1087, Robert of Normandy released him and had him knighted, and Duncan went to the service of William II of England. After his father was killed by the English at the 1093 Battle of Alnwick, his uncle Donald III of Scotland seized power, so Duncan promised to be a vassal of William II if he could secure his backing for his bid to the throne. Duncan seized power in May 1094, but in November he was murdered by his uncle, who reclaimed power.
