Duke Smbat II of Armenia

Duke Smbat II of Armenia (715-775) was the Duke of Bagratid Armenia from 761 to 775, succeeding his brother Duke Sahak of Armenia and preceding Duke Ashot III of Armenia.

Biography[]

Smbat was born in 715, and he was the son of the blind Duke Ashot II of Armenia. He was from the Miaphysite Christian House of Bagrationi, and in 761 he began his reign as the presiding prince of Arab-ruled "Arminiya". In 774 he began a rebellion against the Abbasid Caliphate, but the next year he was killed in the Battle of Bagrevand along with several other Armenian nobles. His son Duke Ashot III of Armenia succeeded him.
