Duke Ramnulf II of Poitou (840-5 August 890), also known as Rannoux, Ranulf, and Ranulph, was the Count of Poitou from 866 to 890 (succeeding Ramnulf I of Poitou and preceding Duke Ebalus of Aquitaine and Duke of Aquitaine from 887 to 890 (succeeding Louis the Stammerer and Waifer of Aquitaine and preceding Louis the Sluggard and Ebalus).
Biography[]
Ramnulf II of Poitou was born in 840. His father Ramnulf I of Poitou, from the French Christian House of Poitou, died in battle against Haesteinn of Nantes on 1 October 866 at age 49. Ramnulf succeeded his father as Count of Poitou upon his death, and during his reign, he created viscounts with powers over regional fortresses to man them against raiding Vikings. Ramnulf was made the Duke of Aquitaine in 887, and in 888, he became king of the Kingdom of Aquitaine, the first king since the death of Louis the Stammerer in 879. He died in 890, and his realm was partitioned between King Louis the Sluggard of Aquitaine, Duke Ebalus of Aquitaine, and Ramnulf III of Poitou (who died soon after, and Ebalus inherited his county).
