Dudley Sanford Gregory (5 February 1800 – 8 December 1874) was Mayor of Jersey City from 1838 to 1840 (preceding Peter McMartin), from 1841 to 1842 (succeeding McMartin and preceding Thomas A. Alexander), and from 1858 to 1860 (succeeding Samuel Wescott and preceding Cornelius Van Vorst). He went on to serve in the US House of Representatives (W-NJ 5) from 4 March 1847 to 3 March 1849, succeeding William Wright and preceding James G. King.
Biography[]
Dudley Sanford Gregory was born in Redding, Connecticut in 1800, and he relocated to Albany, New York as a child. He worked as a clerk at the office of the New York State Comptroller for fourteen years, and became Chief Clerk of the Canal department. In 1834, he moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, and he served in the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders and as Mayor from 1838 to 1840, from 1841 to 1842, and from 1858 to 1860 as a Whig. From 1847 to 1849, he served in the US House of Representatives, representing New Jersey's 5th district. He returned to private business in 1860, and he died in 1874.
