The Duchy of Nassau (1806-1866) was a German state in central Germany, with Wiesbaden as its capital. Formerly a small state, it was later incorporated into the North German Confederation and in 1871 joined the German Empire. In 1836, it had a population of 402,470 people (including 100,610 adults), of which about 80% were literate. Slightly more than half were Catholic, while the rest were Protestant. The upper house of the Landtag was controlled by the Conservative Party of Nassau, while the National Party and Liberal Democratic Party held some of the seats also. The Nassau Army (Nassauische Heer) was commanded by General Alexander von Anhalt and included the 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigades, for a total of 6,000 men. An additional brigade of 3,000 could be fielded upon mobilization.
