The Duchy of Lucca was a small Italian state existing from 9 June 1815 to 17 December 1847, with the city of Lucca serving as its capital. The duchy was formed out of the Principality of Lucca and Piombino, and it was created to compensate the House of Bourbon-Parma for the loss of the Duchy of Parma, which had been granted to the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. In 1847, Duke Charles Louis succeeded to the Duchy of Parma, leaving Lucca; Lucca was then annexed by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
