The Duchy of Lorraine was a duchy of in the Holy Roman Empire, later being a fief of the Kingdom of France. With a capital of Nancy, the Duchy of Lorraine existed from 959 to 1766, with the duchy originally being called Upper Lorraine during the time of the Frankish Empire. The lower duchy was created after Lower Lorraine was dismantled, and Upper Lorraine would exist as the Duchy of Lorraine until the annexation of Lorraine as a province of France in 1766.
