Biography[]
Driss Oukabir was born in Aghbala, Morocco on 13 January 1989, the son of Said and Fatima Oukabir and the older brother of Moussa Oukabir. He once lived in Marseille, France, but his family finally settled in Ripoll, Catalonia, Spain. Oukabir was a believer in anti-Semitism, sharing Facebook videos claiming that there was a Jewish conspiracy to take over the world and that Israel was intentionally killing Palestinian children.
Oukabir also shared rap music videos, a picture of the Berber flag, a post from a Spanish Christian woman calling Aleppo a genocide, and articles about fast cars. Oukabir became well-known in Ripoll, and he was arrested in 2012.
In 2017, his younger brother Moussa stole his identification papers in order to rent a van used in the 2017 Barcelona attack, and news reports claimed that Driss Oukabir was the suspected van driver. However, he came to the local police station that afternoon to report the theft of his documentation, professing his innocence; however, he was arrested as a suspect, and the media continued to speculate about his involvement.
Some media outlets, however, did repeat the fact that he had voluntarily turned himself in because of identity theft. On 27 May, 2021 he was sentenced to 53 years in prison.
