Dowgate is a small ward in the City of London, London, England. Its name comes from Dour, the Celtic word for "water", and it was initially a gate on the Roman London Wall along the Walbrook watercourse and the River Thames. Located south of Cannon Street, it came to be home to several City livery companies.
