Dover 2

Dover is a major town in Kent, England, also located across the Strait of Dover from France. Dover was founded by the Romans as Portus Dubris, and it was the planned landing site for the first of Julius Caesar's invasions of Britain in 55 BC. Portus Dubris became a fortified port under Roman Britain and was connected to Canterbury and Watling Street by Roman roads, and, after the end of Roman rule in Britain in the early 5th century AD, the Germanic Jutes settled in Kent and established what would become one of the first Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. By 850, Dover was a principal town, and, in 1050, Dover become one of England's "Cinque Ports". Dover was burned down during the Norman conquest of England, but the Normans under King William the Conqueror established Dover as a borough and rebuilt a great deal of Saxon Dover. By 1190, the new Dover Castle was complete, and it narrowly withstood a 1216 French siege during the Barons' Wars, while it failed to protect Dover from a destructive French raid in 1295. During the Tudor period, Dover's defenses were expanded, and, in 1648, Dover was captured by the Parliamentarians during the Second English Civil War, having previously supported King Charles I of England. In 1660, King Charles II of England landed at Dover during "The Restoration". From 1801 to 1901, the population increased by 600%, and Dover became a major port of embarkation during World War I and World War II. In 2011, Dover had a population of 31,022 people.
