Donnchad mac Briain

Donnchad mac Briain (1000-1 July 1065) was King of Munster from 1 July 1024 to 1 July 1065, succeeding Dungal Ua Donnchada and preceding Murchad mac Donnchad.

Biography[]

Donnchad mac Briain was born in 1000, the son of Brian Boru and the half-brother of Sigtrygg Silkbeard. He resumed his family's control of Munster in 1024 following the death of King Dungal Ua Donnchada, and he fought against his neighbors Diarmait mac Mail na mBo and Aed in Gai Bernaig from 1046. In 1055, Diarmait defeated Donnchad's son Murchad mac Donnchad at Corco Mruad in County Clare, and Donnchad was deposed in 1063. He went on a pilgrimage to Rome, never to return; he died there in 1065.
