The Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic was a self-declared Soviet republic of the Russian SFSR which existed from 12 February to 20 March 1918, with Kharkov (and later Lugansk) serving as its capital. Three days after the Ukrainian People's Republic signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Central Powers, eastern Ukrainian communists wishing to remain part of Russia proclaimed the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic, which claimed to control the Donbas, Kharkov, Yekaterinoslav, and Kherson Governorates. The Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic was not recognized by either the Ukrainian nationalist government or the Soviets, and, in accordance with the March 1918 second Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic was abolished and merged into the Ukrainian SSR. On 5 February 2015, the pro-Russian separatist Donetsk People's Republic declared itself the successor to the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic, with Fyodor Sergeyev as its spiritual founding father.
