Donald Stuart Russell (22 February 1906-22 February 1998) was the Democratic Governor of South Carolina from 15 January 1963 to 22 April 1965 (succeeding Fritz Hollings and preceding Robert Evander McNair) and a US Senator from 22 April 1965 to 8 November 1966 (succeeding Olin D. Johnston and preceding Fritz Hollings).

Biography[]

Donald Stuart Russell was born in Lafayette Springs, Mississippi in 1906, and he was raised in Chester, South Carolina. He became a lawyer in Union in 1929 and in Spartanburg in 1930, and he served as President of the University of South Carolina from 1951 to 1957. Russell served as Assistant Secretary of State for Administration from 1945 to 1947, as Governor from 1963 to 1965, in the US Senate from 1965 to 1966, as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina from 1966 to 1971, and as Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1971 until his death on his 92nd birthday in 1998. During his tenure in the Senate, he was more conservative than 61% of his colleagues and 88% of his fellow Democrats.
