Donald III of Scotland (2 December 1039-2 February 1099), also known as Donald Bane or Donalbain, was the King of Scotland from 1093 to 1097, succeeding Malcolm III of Scotland and preceding Edgar of Scotland with a brief interruption by Duncan II of Scotland from May to 12 November 1094.
Biography[]
Donald was born on 2 December 1039 to King Duncan I of Scotland, and he was the middle brother of Malcolm III of Scotland and Earl Malmure of Atholl. Donald was forced to flee to Ireland when Macbeth of Scotland murdered his father in 1040, returning after Macbeth was slain by Macduff in 1057. In 1093, his brother Malcolm was killed at the Battle of Alnwick against the Kingdom of England along with his son Edward Canmore, and Donald marched on Edinburgh with an army and forced Margaret of Wessex and her sons by Malcolm to surrender. Donald was named the new king, but in May 1094 his nephew Duncan rose in rebellion against him. Donald put down the rebellion and had him executed, and he returned to power. However, in 1097 Edgar of Scotland overthrew him and had him blinded and banished to Angus, where he died.
