
Domingo Nieto (15 August 1803-17 February 1844) was a Peruvian grand marshal who controlled Peru from 1843 to 1844 as president of a government junta.
Biography[]
Domingo Nieto was born in Ilo, Viceroyalty of Peru in 1803, and he came from a noble family of Spanish and Inca descent. He joined the patriot cause of the Peruvian War of Independence at the age of 18 and acquired a reputation of siding with the rule of law against all odds. Nieto became a general at age 29 and Grand Marshal of Peru at age 39, and he fought at the Battle of Tarqui in 1829. He later fought alongside Ramon Castilla to overthrow the conservative dictator Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco, and the government junta appointed Nieto president in 1843. However, he died a few months later, and Castilla succeeded him.
