Domenico Doria

Domenico Doria (died 1498) was a Genoese soldier. In 1498, Cardinal Ascanio Sforza hired him to train the Papal Army in hand-to-hand combat, and Sforza suggested him as a candidate for Captain-General of the Papal States. Pope Alexander VI considered Doria as a neutral option, as he was neither Virginio Orsini nor Fabrizio Colonna, and he was given the position. He died when he fell from his horse during a thunderstorm in Rome, and Cesare Borgia replaced him as commander, with Rodrigo Borgia Lanzol serving as his second-in-command.
