Doge Martino of Amalfi (721-) was the Doge of the Republic of Amalfi from 780, succeeding Doge Leon of Amalfi. Like his predecessor, Martino's daughter was the dogaressa of the Republic of Venice.
Biography[]
Martino was born in 721 to the House of Sorrenti, a dynasty of Catholic Italians. He was a patrician in the Republic of Amalfi, and he was a powerful man. In 769 he married his daughter Claudia Sorrenti to Doge Maurizio of Venice, the head of the Republic of Venice - this was an unusual move, as Amalfi and Venice were rivals. In 780, he was elected as Doge after the death of Doge Leon of Amalfi, which was ironic; his predecessor Doge Leon married his daughter Aikaterine Amalfinos to Doge Maurizio's son, the Doge Giovanni of Venice, while Martino married his daughter to Doge Maurizio.
