Doge Leon of Amalfi

Doge Leon of Amalfi (731-4 January 780) was the Doge of Amalfi as a vassal of the Byzantine Empire until 780, preceding Doge Martino of Amalfi. Patrician Timoleon of Amalfinos succeeded him as the head of the House of Amalfinos.

Biography[]

Leon was born to the House of Amalfinos, a dynasty of Catholic Greeks on the western coast of southern Italy. Leon was a rival of the Republic of Venice on the other coast of Italy on the Adriatic Sea, but in 769 he agreed to marry his daughter Aikaterine Amalfinos to Doge Maurizio of Venice's son, the future Doge Giovanni of Venice. He died of depression on 4 January 780 and was succeeded by Doge Martino of Amalfi of the House of Sorrenti, also a marriage relative of the House of Galbaio.
