Patrician Encagilio of Antenoreo

Patrician Encagilio of Antenoreo (727-21 June 771) was the Doge of Venice from 770 to 771, succeeding Doge Teodato of Venice and preceding Doge Giovanni of Venice.

Biography[]

Encagilio was born to the House of Antenoreo, a major family of Venice. He was appointed the Chancellor of the Republic of Venice under Doge Maurizio of Venice, and he had enough money and respect to be given the title of heir apparent to Venice. He had a perfect opinion of Maurizio, and he was loyal to him until his death in 770. In December of that year, the new doge Doge Teodato of Venice was killed by a "lone bowman" that was secretly sent by Giovanni Galbaio, and Encagilio was elected as the new doge.

Encagilio was generous towards the House of Galbaio, but Giovanni knew that he had to get rid of Encagilio if he was to meet his destiny as Doge of Venice. Encagilio made Giovanni a commander of Venice, and Giovanni had some remorse for killing Encagilio, but his conscience was clear. On 21 June 771, Mayor Ezzelino of Jesolo's archers caught him in a deadly crossfire between the scroll deposit and a grassy knoll, killing him. Giovanni became the new doge after his death.
