Doge Domenico of Venice

Doge Domenico of Venice (720-) was the Doge of Venice from 755 to 764, succeeding Doge Galla of Venice and preceding Doge Maurizio of Venice.

Biography[]

Domenico Monegario

Doge Domenico of Venice was born in 720 to the House of Monegario, and in 755 he overthrew Doge Galla of Venice to become the Doge of the Republic of Venice. He reigned as doge for nine years, and in 764 Doge Maurizio of Venice supplanted him and blinded him, becoming the new doge. The House of Galbaio dynasty replaced the Monegario family, leaving Domenico as a blind man with no power.

Domenico remained the patrician of Monegario in the administration of Maurizio, but he failed to regain the title of doge. His family grew weak, and the House of Dandolo replaced it after he failed to get enough support to contend for the title of doge. Domenico ceased to be a patrician, and was now just a simple courtier of the republic that he once ruled.
