Flag of Djibouti

Djibouti is an East African country, with Djibouti serving as its capital. In 1883, the ruling Somali and Afar sultans signed Djibouti away in land treaties with France, which ruled Djibouti as "French Somaliland" until 1967 and as the "French Territory of the Afars and the Issas" until 27 June 1977, when the Djiboutian people voted for independence. On 20 September of that year, Djibouti joined the United Nations. In the early 1990s, tensions over government representation led to the Djiboutian Civil War breaking out, ending in a power-sharing agreement in 2000. Djibouti became a key refuelling and transshipment center, becoming one of the world's busiest ports. In 2016, Djibouti had a population of 942,333 people.
