Southerners

A family of Southerners

Dixie is a term referring to the American South; it can also refer to its unique culture. The term refers to white southerners, most of whom are Protestants of British Isles (or other white Protestant) descent. Also called "Southerners" or disparagingly called "Rednecks", the people of the South have frequently been associated with strong Christian values, social conservatism, and opposition to big government (being pro-states' rights). The Democratic Party was the most popular party among southerners before the 1960s, when most white southerners defected to the Republican Party due to the Democrats' realignment with the Civil Rights movement and the Democrats' gradual abandonment of conservatism in favor of social liberalism.
