Dimitar Blagoev (14 June 1856 – 7 May 1924) was the founder of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
Biography[]
Dimitar Blagoev was born in Zagorichani, Macedonia, Ottoman Empire (now Agioi Anargyroi, Greece) on 14 June 1856. Blagoev was raised in a pure Bulgarian village, and he was influenced by nationalist ideals from a young age. He became involved with socialist newspapers in Russia, but he was later extradited back to Bulgaria by the czarist regime. In 1894, he founded the Bulgarian Workers' Social Democratic Party, which evolved into the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1919; he became a National Assembly member. Blagoev opposed Bulgaria's wars in the Balkans and during World War I, and he opposed the partition of Bulgaria after the end of the latter conflict. He died in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1924.
