Harold Hancox (1902-1921), better known as the Digbeth Kid, was a member of the Peaky Blinders gang. He was murdered at the Winson Green prison by the Sabini Gang in 1921.
Biography[]
Harold Hancox was born in Digbeth, Birmingham, England in 1902, and he came to be a fan of American Western films with Tom Mix, leading to him adopting the nickname "the Digbeth Kid" after Billy the Kid. He stayed out of trouble as a youth, although his sister made him a gun belt out of a used apron, and he made a wooden pistol so that he could emulate a cowboy. In 1921, he was hired by the Peaky Blinders to go to jail so that the police could satisfy their quota of illegal betting arrests, and he would be paid 5 pounds for his troubles. However, while he was in prison, his throat was slit by one of Darby Sabini's men, despite his urging that he had been stood up and was not a real gang member.
