Dieter Engelberg

Dieter Engelberg (2 May 1897 – 10 July 1943) was a Colonel of Nazi Germany's Wehrmacht during World War II.

Biography[]

Dieter Engelberg was born on 2 May 1897 in Paderborn, German Empire. He fought in World War I and joined the Nazi Party during the Interwar Years, fighting in the German Revolution against the Marxists and other leftist groups. During World War II he rose in the ranks, and in July 1943 the United Kingdom decided to assassinate him during Operation Husky. The British launched a night attack against Wehrmacht forces in Sicily, and Engelberg's convoy was ambushed as it headed into the town. He was killed by a grenade blast during the firefight between the British commandos and the German soldiers.
