Diego de la Vega was born in Madrid, Spain in 1782 son of a Spanish noble family from Andalusia. Just before reaching California in New Spain, Diego learned of the tyranny of Captain Don Rafael Montero. Diego decided that his best course of action was to conceal his ability with a sword, and to affect the demeanor of a milquetoast intellectual rather than a decisive man of action. His alter ego, Zorro, operated primarily at night, taking the direct action that Diego cannot. He married Esperanza de la Vega, the daughter of Governor Monasterio.

In 1821, Diego had a daughter called Elena de la Vega, while Mexico declared their independence from Spain. Few days later Zorro humillated governor Montero in the square, but the governor realised that all this time el Zorro was Diego because he used his real tone of voice instead the voice he used as the hero.

That night Montero raided Diego's house and arrested him. Esperanza was killed by one of the soldiers who shot her during the sword fight between Montero and Diego. Montero killed the soldier and then kidnapped Elena, who was raised as her child. Diego was arrested and sent to a prison forever.

In 1841, Diego escaped from prison and helped Alejandro Murrieta to avenge his brother. Alejandro became the new Zorro and Diego washis butler "Bernardo". Diego met again Montero at his home and then he saw again her daughter Elena. Diego forced Montero to told the truth about Elena's true father. Then she helped Diego and Alejandro.

Diego fought Montero at the mine. When Montero was about to win, Diego pushed a wagon full of gold who fell off a cliff killing Montero and American captain Harrison Love.

Diego died due to his injuries and the explosion of the mine. Alejandro and Elena buried him there.
