Diego Monaldo (1992-) was President of Argentina from 22 April 2019. Monaldo belonged to the Peronist Justicialist Party, and he oversaw the implementation of populist economic reforms, concurrent with an economic boom.

Biography[]

Diego Monaldo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1992, and he was raised in a working-class family of Italian heritage. Monaldo became active in the Justicialist Party at a young age, and he also became a famed soccer player. Monaldo announced his entry into national politics in 2019 at the age of 27, and the Justicialist Party chose Monaldo as its leader ahead of the 2019 general election. The Justicialists won 31.85% of the vote and 19/60 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, followed by the conservative Republican Proposal with 22.7% and 14/60 seats, the liberal Radical Civic Union with 12.56% and 8/60 seats, the Peronist Renewal Front with 11.47% and 7/60 seats, the anti-corruption Civic Coalition ARI with 8.68% and 5/60 seats, the Trotskyist Izquierda Socialista with 8.56% and 5/60 seats, and the Peronist Federal Consensus with 4.17% and 2/60 seats. Monaldo, as leader of the Justicialist Party, also competed in the 2019 presidential election, defeating Republican Proposal candidate Francisco Beneventi by a margin of 56% to 44%.

Monaldo inherited an economy of $162 million with a weekly increase of $7 million, and Monaldo immediately set about pursuing an economically populist program. The Chamber voted 54-1 to create public housing, 52-2 for public libraries, 42-5 for a bus transport service, 32-7 for a pollution tax, 46-2 for torture prohibition, 26-19 against a school bux tax, 52-2 for labor unions, 47-6 against mass surveillance (with only the Renewal Front supporting it), 42-5 for organ donation, 33-19 to legalize prostitution, 31-15 for a consumption tax, 35-10 to legalize gambling, and 32-17 against a junk food tax. By the turn of 2020, the Argentine economy had reached $202 million with a weekly increase of $7 million, and public happiness was incredibly high.

On 13 January 2020, new elections were held, and the Justicialist Party increased its share of the vote to 36.38% and 22 seats (winning three more seats), while PRO fell to 20.37% and 12 seats (losing two seats), the Renewal Front rose to 12.66% and 8 seats (gaining a seat), the UCR fell to 11.69% and 7 seats (losing a seat), the Civic Coalition ARI fell to 7.84% and 5 seats, Izquierda Socialista fell to 6.77% and 4 seats (losing a seat), and Federal Consensus rose to 4.28% and 2 seats.
