Dexios the Envious

Dexios the Envious (died 431 BC) was the exiled Spartan captain of the Pirate Islands. He was assassinated by the mercenary Kassandra during the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC.

Biography[]

Dexios was a captain in the Spartan navy, and, during the mid-5th century BC, he became the leader of the Pirate Islands. Stories abounded of Dexios' desire for wealth. Some of his people feared he would happily let them die should it mean his personal wealth and that of the state would increase, and they were right. In 431 BC, the pirate fleet of Xenia took over the island capital of Koressia, forcing Dexios to relocate the seat of government to Koressia Fort. There, he was assassinated by the mercenary Kassandra that same year, and his body lay draped over one of the fort's tower walls in plain view of passers-by.
