Devlet I Giray (1512-25 June 1577) was Khan of Crimea from 1551 to 1577, succeeding Sahib I Giray and preceding Mehmed II Giray. The grandson of Menli I Giray, he served under Sultan Selim I in Egypt before becoming his uncle Saadet I Giray's kalga (vizier). In 1551, the Ottomans installed him on the Crimean throne after assassinating Sahib I Giray for being disloyal, and Devlet's reign saw the Russians conquer the Kazan Khanate (to which Devlet laid claim) and the Astrakhan Khanate, Devlet invaded Muscovy and Circassia, and the Cossacks of the Zaporizhian Sich battled Devlet along the Wild Fields. In 1571, Devlet invaded Muscovy and burned Moscow, killing 80,000 Russians and enslaving 150,000. He reinvaded Russia in 1572 with Ottoman aid but was defeated at the Battle of Molodi; Devlet lost a son and grandson in that battle. Devlet died of the plague in 1577.
