
Dermot Nesbitt (born 14 August 1947) was a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for South Down from 25 June 1998 to 7 March 2007, preceding John McCallister. Nesbitt was a member of the Ulster Unionist Party.
Biography[]
Dermot Nesbitt was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland on 14 August 1947 to an Anglican family. Nesbitt studied economics at Queens University before joining the Ulster Unionist Party, and he was elected to the Down District Council in 1981, serving until 1989. In 1983, he was chatting with fellow UUP member Edgar Graham at the main campus library's nearby square when a Provisional IRA gunman assassinated Graham, witnessing Graham's death. In 1996, Nesbitt was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum for South Down, and he became the first member of the Northern Ireland Assembly from the region. Nesbitt retired in 2007.
