Dennis Cavendish (1899 - 29 March 1944) was a British Royal Air Force Flight Lieutenant during World War II.
Biography[]
Cavendish was born in London in 1899. He joined the British Army in 1917 during World War I. After the war he joined the Royal Air Force. In 1940, Cavendish was captured by the Germans and sent to a POW camp in Germany. In 1943, Cavendish was sent to Stalag Luft III. Cavendish had an important duty for the building of the tunnel during the Great Escape.
Cavendish travelled by truck during the escape but the driver betrayed him and he drove him to the Gestapo. He was shot alongside with the other 50 prisioners on 29 March 1944, just 5 days after escaping from Stalag Luft III.
