The Democratic Party of Italy (PD) is a social democratic political party in Italy, founded on 14 October 2007 as a merger of several Christian leftists. The party was known for attacking both labor unions as well as bankers and capitalists, pursuing a liberal policy seen in the United States under President Bill Clinton and the US Democratic Party and seen in the United Kingdom under Tony Blair and the UK Labor Party. In 2013, the party carried all of the regions of southern and central Italy, Venetia, Piedmont, and Sardinia, an overwhelming majority of the country. In 2016, under Matteo Renzi, the PD held 303/630 Chamber of Deputies seats, 114/315 Senate seats, 29/73 European Parliament seats, and 15/20 regional government seats, making it the largest party in the country.
