The Democratic Party (DP) is a liberal political party in Hong Kong that was founded in 1990 as the United Democrats of Hong Kong (UDHK). The party merged together pro-democracy factions into one bloc, and the party called for an end to one-party rule in China. From 1995 to 2004, the DP was the largest party in Hong Kong, but the rising Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong won the 2004 election to become the new largest party in the Legislative Council. The Democratic Party's moderate stances led to it being reduced to six Legislative Council seats in 2012, its worst electoral performance in history.
