The Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) is a liberal political party in Japan that was founded on 7 May 2018. The party was formed from the merger of the Democratic Party of Japan and Kibo no To, with 62 politicians from the old parties joining the new DPFP; it consisted of the right-wing of the DPJ as well as the center-right of Kibo no To, with the DPJ's left-wing joining the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. The party was formed with the goal of resisting the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, which dominated national politics. The Liberal Party of Japan merged into the DPFP in 2019, but, in September 2020, a majority of DPFP members agreed to merge with the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, and the party was officially dissolved on 11 September 2020. However, Yuichiro Tamaki led 14 DPFP members in rejecting the merger, and they refounded the party that same day.
The party's main support bases include moderate and centrist voters who seek a balance between social welfare and economic growth; disillusioned LDP voters concerned about income inequality, social welfare, and political corruption; labor unions and workers due to its views on the minimum wage and labor conditions; socially liberal voters who supported its progressive social views, and voters with specific regional concerns and interests.
