The Democratic Alliance is a centrist political party in South Africa that was founded in 2000, originally being known as the Democratic Party (founded in 1989). The party was founded by anti-Apartheid liberal activists, and it emerged as one of the main parties in the new South Africa during the 1990s. The party had both center-left and center-right policies, and it was considered to a liberal party. The party had the support of over 80% of the Afrikaans and English-speaking population and 65% of people over the age of 35, although the party had a black leader as of 2017.
In elections, the DA have the strongest support in the Western Cape.
