Delaware is one of the fifty states of the United States, located on the East Coast along the Atlantic Ocean. The state was named for Thomas West, the Lord De La Warr, the first colonial governor of Virginia, whose name was also given to the Delaware Bay and the Lenape tribe (also known as the "Delaware). Delaware is divided into New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties, the state with the fewest number of counties. On 7 December 1787, Delaware was the first US state to ratify the US Constitution, being the first state. In 2015, Delaware had a population of 945,934, with 68.9% of them being whites, 21.4% African-Americans, .5% Native Americans, 3.2% Asians, 2.7% multiracial, and 3.4% others (18.1% Irish, 15.6% Germans, 16.2% English, 10% Italians, 4.8% Polish, 2.5% French, and 1.8% Scots). 57% are Protestant, 17% irreligious, 9% Catholic, 2% Muslim, 1% Jewish, 5% other, and 9% unknown.
