Deiphobus (died 1183 BC) was a Trojan prince who served as a general during the Trojan War.
Biography[]
Deiphobus was a son of Priam and Hecuba and a brother of Hector, Paris, Troilus, and the many other Trojanprinces. He and his brother Helenus led a group of soldiers at the siege of the newly-constructed Argive wall during the Trojan War, killing many Greek warriors and wounding the Achaean hero Meriones. As Hector was fleeing Achilles, Athena took the shape of Deiphobus and goaded Hector to make a stand and fight, only to disappear when Hector turned to his brother to ask for a spear to hurl at Achilles. Deiphobus and Paris later ambushed and killed Achilles while luring him to their sister Polyxena, and, after Paris' death, Deiphobus was given Helen as a bride for his deeds in the war. He accompanied Helen as she walked around the Trojan Horse, calling out the names of the Greeks within the voices of their wives, and Menelaus and Odysseus had to restrain the men inside from responding. During the Sack of Troy, Deiphobus was slain by either Odysseus and Menelaus, and Helen celebrated his death, as she did not love Deiphobus and instead decided she would rather return to Menelaus.
