The Defense of Salta occurred on 6 January 1815 when an army of Argentine Unitarians defended the city of Salta from a Federalist siege amid the Argentine Civil Wars.
Within days of Salta's fall to the Unitarios, several Federalist armies descended on the city, intent on retaking it. The Unitarios were reinforced by several nearby armies, and they erected defensive positions along Salta's courtyard. When the Federalists began their assault, their charging soldiers were raked with musketry from the Unitarios, who took cover behind sandbags. The Federalist assaults were fierce, and the Unitarian officer Galeano Moretti was wounded during the intense hand-to-hand combat. However, the Unitarios were able to force back the Federalist assaults and inflict heavy losses, turning the tide of the first round of the Argentine Civil Wars.
