Decimus Rutilius Iullus

Decimus Rutilius Iullus (108 BC-) was a Roman statesman and admiral who served in the First Mithridatic War. Iullus was loyal to Sulla and his conservative Optimates faction, affiliating himself with its populist Proletarii Collegium wing. In 87 BC, he was given command of the Classis I Graeca raised in Crete with the objective of preventing the Mithridatic armies from invading the vulnerable island, and, once the Pontic invasion fleets turned back to Anatolia, Iullus' fleet was disbanded and Iullus returned home.
