Debbie Stabenow

Deborah Ann "Debbie" Stabenow (born 29 April 1950) was a member of the US Senate from Michigan (D) from 3 January 2001 to 3 January 2025, succeeding Spencer Abraham and preceding Elissa Slotkin; she served in the US House of Representatives from Michigan's 8th district from 3 January 1997 to 3 January 2001, succeeding Dick Chrysler and preceding Mike Rogers.

Biography[]

Deborah Ann Greer was born in Gladwin, Michigan on 29 April 1950, and she graduated from Michigan State University in 1972. She served on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners from 1975 to 1978, when she was elected to the State House of Representatives as a Democratic Party member. She served in the State House until 1990 and in the State Senate from 1990 to 1994, when she ran for Lieutenant Governor. She lost, but she was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1996, and then to the US Senate in 2001. Stabenow opposed drilling in the Great Lakes (despite opposing other environmental regulations), supported gun control legislation, supported Obamacare, and supported Barack Obama's 2009 stimulus plan. She retired in 2024.
