Dawson City

Dawson City is a town in Yukon, Canada, the second-largest town in the province. It was founded in January 1897 and named for the geologist George M. Dawson, who had explored and mapped the region in 1887. Dawson City was capital of Yukon from 1898 to 1952, when the capital was moved to Whitehorse. Dawson City was inseparably linked to the Klondike Gold Rush, as it was located along Yukon Trail and became home to 40,000 people in 1898. By 1899, the gold rush had plummeted and only 8,000 remained, and, by the city's incorporation in 1902, only 5,000 people remained. After World War II, the Alaska Highway bypassed Dawson City, leading to further decline. Since the 1970s, the town has recovered from having between 600-900 people; by 2016, Dawson City had 1,375 residents.
