David Lee Walters (20 November 1951-) was the Democratic Governor of Oklahoma from 14 January 1991 to 9 January 1995, succeeding Henry Bellmon and preceding Frank Keating.
Biography[]
David Walters was born in Canute, Oklahoma in 1951, and he worked as the project manager for Governor David Boren and as the assistant and associate provost of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center before becoming a realtor in 1982. He failed in his 1986 gubernatorial bid, but, in 1990, he carried 75 of the state's 77 counties and oversaw increased education funding and renovations for every college campus in the state. However, he was later accused of hiding $18,000 in campaign donations by attributing them to someone else, and, while the charge was later expunged after Walters paid a fine, his chances of re-election were sabotaged, and he attributed his decision not to run again to the suicide of his son in 1991. He later failed in his 2002 bid for the US Senate, losing to Republican Jim Inhofe by a 57.3% to 36.3% margin.
