David Marston Clough

David Marston Clough (27 December 1846-28 August 1924) was the Republican Governor of Minnesota from 31 January 1895 to 2 January 1899, succeeding Knute Nelson and preceding John Lind.

Biography[]

David Marston Clough was born in Lyme, New Hampshire in 1846, and he was raised along the Rum River in Minnesota. Clough became a logging businessman at the age of 20, moving to Minneapolis in 1872 and serving on the city council in 1883, in the state senate from 1887 to 1893, as Lieutenant Governor from 1893 to 1895, and Governor of Minnesota from 1895 to 1899. He oversaw the establishment of the Board of Pardons, withdrew the right of aliens to vote, authorized municipalities to frame "home rule" charters, raised taxes on several private industries, and enacted child-labor laws. He died in 1924.
