David Davis

David Davis (born 23 December 1948) was the UK Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union from 13 July 2016 to 8 July 2018, preceding Dominic Raab.

Biography[]

David Davis was born in York, England in 1943, and he was raised in a council estate in London. He was educated at Bec Grammar School in Tooting, and he went into a career with Tate & Lyle. Davis entered Parliament in 1987 for the Conservative Party as MP for Boothferry, and he served as John Major's Europe Minister from 1994 to 1997. He subsequently served as Conservative Party chairman from 2001 to 2002, and he came second in the 2005 leadership contest. In 2008, he resigned as MP in order to force a by-election, in which he ran for re-election as a pro-civil liberties candidate; he was re-elected to his old seat as a backbencher. In 2016, he was appointed by Prime Minister Theresa May as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union. In 2018, he caused controversy by editing reports on the economic effects of Brexit, and he resigned on 8 July 2018, setting off a chain of several more resignations.
