David Cargo

David Francis Cargo (13 January 1929 – 5 July 2013) was Governor of New Mexico (R) from 1 January 1967 to 1 January 1971, succeeding Jack M. Campbell and preceding Bruce King.

Biography[]

David Francis Cargo was born in Dowagiac, Michigan in 1929, and he served in the State House of Representatives from 1963 to 1967 as a Republican; he forced proportional representation in the state legislature, and he was one of the youngest governors elected in US history at the age of 38. He was considered a liberal Republican in the style of Nelson Rockefeller, and he supporter prisoner rehabilitation and a war on poverty; however, President Richard Nixon diverted many of his anti-poverty funds to the Vietnam War. He launched failed US Senate bids in 1970 to 1972, and he died of complications from a stroke in 2013.
