
David Campbell (7 August 1779-19 March 1859) was the Democratic Governor of Virginia from 31 March 1837 to 31 March 1840, succeeding Wyndham Robertson and preceding Thomas Walker Gilmer.
Biography[]
David Campbell was born in Washington County, Virginia in 1779, and he became a successful merchant in Abingdon before serving as deputy clerk of Washington County from 1802 to 1812 and in the US Army during the War of 1812. Campbell went on to serve as a state senator from 1820 to 1824 and as Governor from 1837 to 1840, and he advocated for statewide compulsory education. He died in 1859.
