Dauicios

Dauicios (died 218 BC) was King of the Ligures during the 3rd century BC. He fought against the Roman Republic at the time of the Second Punic War, and he was slain at the Battle of Cantalupum in 218 BC. He was succeeded by Queen Albisia.

Biography[]

Dauicios was born in the Celtic Ligures tribe, and he became their king by the late 3rd century BC, ruling over parts of Cisalpine Gaul from Genoa. By 218 BC, the Gauls in the Po Valley had grown restless and took up arms against the Roman Republic once more, forcing the Romans to dispatch legions to pacify the Ligures. When Legio II Veneria arrived in the Ligurian borderlands, Dauicios led a Ligurian army to confront the Romans near present-day Cantalupo Ligure. The ensuing Battle of Cantalupum was a disaster for the Ligures, who lost their king and their field army in a bloody defeat.
