Datus Ensign Coon

Datus Ensign Coon (20 February 1831-17 December 1893) was a Union Army colonel who served in the American Civil War.

Biography[]

Datus Ensign Coon was born in De Ruyter, New York in 1831, and he worked on a farm in Iowa before stating a newspaper. He served as colonel of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War, eventually commanding a cavalry brigade at the Battle of Tupelo. During Reconstruction, he served as an inspector in Alabama, and he served as a delegate to that state's 1875 constitutional convention and as a state legislator from Dallas County. Coon later served as a commercial agent in Baracoa, Cuba and as a veterans' organization president in San Diego, California, where he died in 1893.
